I joined Instagram in January 2016. My first reaction was “I don’t get it. It’s just pictures.” Duh. Yes, it is just pictures. Today, Instagram is one of my favourite platforms because of the beautiful images that I get to experience through others. There is a reason why posts with images on all of the social media channels get so much more engagement than the posts with just text. Images evoke emotions and reactions that plain text cannot.
Here are 8 tips for creating beautiful images on Instagram.
- Set the stage
Instagram is full of beautiful photos so do your best to make your photos look beautiful as well. If you’re taking a photo of an item, stage it. Place it in such a way that your audience can clearly see what it is. Remove distractions from the background and take away anything that shouldn’t be visible in the photo. Clutter doesn’t add to the beauty. Make sure the background is plain and that there is enough contrast between the background and the item that you wish to highlight in the photo.
- Take multiple shots
Don’t just upload the first photo you take. Take multiple shots and choose the best one. Try different angles and compositions.
- Play with the filters
There are many filters within the Instagram app to enhance your photo. With a click of a button you can see what your photo looks like with different filters applied to it. Experiment a little and have fun.
- Use photo editing tools
If you want to take your photos to the next level, there are several photo editing tools that are easy to use. PicMonkey and Canva are two design programs that allow you to create beautiful images from your own photos. The options are limitless with what you can design without having to be a graphic designer.
- Take engaging selfies
If you’re a person who likes to take selfies, make sure it’s a photo op that is worth taking. Think of your audience and what is of interest to them. Take photos of yourself doing different activities in a variety of locations with other people in the photo with you.
- Take lots of pictures!
Always be ready to capture a beautiful shot and to share it with your followers. You never know when the perfect photo opportunity will present itself. Fortunately with the high quality cameras available on smartphones, we rarely find ourselves without a camera!
- Have quality standards
Don’t just post and walk away. Check what your image looks like immediately after posting it. Hold each image to a certain level of standard. If the photo doesn’t look beautiful for whatever reason, delete and redo it. Be proud of every single image that you put in your feed.
- Evaluate your images based on audience engagement
Each post should serve a purpose for your audience. Is the image entertaining? Engaging? Educational? Funny? Interesting? Think of your audience. Why do they want to see this photo?
Which of your posts elicit the most likes and comments? Which posts are most popular with your audience and what resonates with them? What do they want to see more of? Determine what posts are most appreciated and create more of them!
